Hey Folks,

What's the recommended brand/color/etc. for power steering fluid for these cars? I seem to have a leak somewhere, and think adding more plus something to make it fluoresce is going to be the easiest way to find the leak.

Back in the day you used ATF, but we've come a long way in 38 years. ATF is different now.

This is the stuff to use. You can get it from NAPA.

Thanks Harv. Will NAPA know what fluid is correct if I go in and ask them for it? I've trusted them with parts for the rest of my fleet, but was worried I'd do that with this, and find out that the fluid they list is wrong (since that's occasionally the case), and wind up damaging stuff.

They should have it on the shelf at NAPA. If not, show them a photo of it on your phone and they should have it in the back.

After decades of running ATF through a system do you think it's wise to now switch

I'll argue 'til I'm blue in the face that the ATF that was put in these cars 40 years ago has a different chemical makeup than the ATF they are selling now.

The Mercedesource guy has a video on this. Use the Febi stuff, not ATF.

You can still buy Suffix A automatic transmission fluid from Pilot stations, too. The new FEBI fluid will work, but it deteriorates the seals in the pump and steering gear box over time. Be cautions about using it.

I picked up a bottle of the fluid Harv suggested. Is there a line or amount of fluid which I'm supposed to add? The reservoir is just capped with a bolt, and no real indicators that I could see.

I don't know what the situation is in the USA, but here in Australia, Castrol and others still make Dex II and Dex III and it is readilly available at auto supply retail outlets. These were the ATF's in the 1960's and 70's and were used in GM auto's into the early 2000's.
