I have tried looking for diagnosis on this light; located in between the speedo and tacho on the bottom part of the dashboard. Says 'EXT TEMP'. Would this be exhaust temperature, or external temperature? Lights up when the car has been running for a few minutes. Water temperature is within spec.

This is a 1979 Japanese-spec 6.9.

What could be the culprit?

That's an Odd one. Whats the chassis number? A look on the EPC might explain what it is. EXT usually means Exterior .japanese versions didn't have catalysts so there won't be an exhaust excess temperature light, which is a post 2000 thing anyway.
