Eugene,
If you connect the cross pipe up between the two rear bellows units, you just need the one Schrader valve in the left tank for both units.

I went to MB dealership to get "limited slip" oil for diff, part#001-989-17-03-10. Part# has been changed to 001-989-33-03-12. I bought two cans, price around 60 dollars.

Is the any info on the forum, how to properly change oil in rear axle?
Thank you, Eugene.

Hello, I use Hypoidoil SAE 90 LS for these diffs. Aftermarket price is EUR 9.90 per Liter plus postage.

Look at the "international section" Only little English spoken....who cares for that price?
Seems USA is not included....

I'd have your parts specifier check foot notes; The 001 989 17 03 10 replaced 000 583 09 04 and thus required additive 000 989 82 03. Not sure about the superseded gear oil you now have. (I see I need to get an updated Approved Service Products book)

My procedure for filling/draining rear axle is with the vehicle and rear axles level.

Just to add 2c, Thanks MikeM
I drain for about a week that stuff clings to surfaces well and will flow eventually. Until there is just a hanging drop. this depends upon ambient garage temperature.

I am preparing my car to send to paint-shop. The shop requires my car to move around their facility. My car doesnt start well when its cold so I decided to install Pertronix 1885 kit with coil 40011. Waiting for my order and hoping I can handle it:)

Eugene: Installation will not be a problem. I've had mine for about 6 years in a daily driver. I suggest you take the distributor out of the car and hold it in a vise on the bench, but that is not necessary. You will need to file or grind the sole plate just a little to fit but that's O.K. You will need to remove the felt oiler because that's in the way. Pull your leads through a section of heat-shrink to provide the "One Wire" appearance. Do this before you clamp on the terminals. Maybe an hour or so total.

Oh, and by the way, you likely will need to add a 50 to 100 ohm resister to the tachometer to avoid the needle bounce. Cut the wire, put on the heat shrink, solder it up and cover it up. No problem.

Eugene....How did you know which Pertronix kit you needed - it sounds like a different number than I used on #2462, and I'm thinking about putting one in #0953??

Thank you for your replies,
My distributor 0-231-402-005 was not listed on Pertronix website. I called them and got info on right kit. Its widely available for sale on internet, I paid around $120 for the kit, coil and shipping.

Conversion is done but car doesn't start. Here is my installation step by step:

1. Marked all wires accordingly, new coil is in.

2. All parts are removed.

3. As Jack mentioned, I need to grind the sole plate.

4. New ignition kit is installed. Red wire goes to coil (positive), black to coil (negative).

5.According to instructions, resistor is not needed. I removed this part thinking its the one and directly connected red wire to the coil.

After several attempts, I disconnected red wire from coil (positive) and directly connected to battery (positive). No result.
Your comments greatly appreciated.

Eugene,

I will have to go back to my notes and/or look at the car. It is now in a storage unit. I did this a few years back with no problem. It has never failed.

I checked the article that appeared in the Winter '05-'06 LodeStar and your installation looks correct. If you had the wires to the wrong coil terminals, you would have smoked the unit! You didn't specify what model # Pertronix you have; I have Pertronix #1884 Ignitor (Not the Ignitor II). In some cases, the rotating magnet has to fitted carefully so as not to block the cap from making contact. Also, check all connections of the secondary circuit from coil to spark plug leads. Good luck.

Hm, when I did that job 3 years ago there was no special item for the rare "US-distributor" available.... I took the usual one for the EURO-engine and dislocated it a little bit by carefully drilling the groundplate of the pertronix so that I could fix it with the screw at the "right" place. After that I finally got correct ignition timing.
If you want me I could have a look and take a pic from the distributor inside. Good argument to have a look into the garage....
I remember we had this thing with the US-distributor here before, maybe 2 years ago. The pics I took helped to clarify correct positioning of the item. Maybe someone else rembers that also who is capable to use the search engine here.

Found what I meant, take a look at my pics here. To my feeling that looks different. Someone else who knows more should decide if that is important.
